Atletico Madrid All-Time Team for Foreign Players
Real MadridBarcelonaValencia, Villarreal
Atletico MadridSevillaAtletic Bilbao,
Deportivo La Coruna  Real Sociedad,
Real BetisReal ZaragozaEspanyol

This is my selection of a 25 member all-time team for the club.  The number 25 was chosen because it is the official squad size for the Champions' League.

Atletico Madrid is the third best team in Spain after Real Madrid and Barcelona. They were runner-ups at the European Cup three times, won a singe Cup Winners' Cup and two Europa League.  In 1995-1996, they also won the Double(La Liga and Copa del Rey).

Atlético's home kit is red and white vertical striped shirts, with blue shorts, and blue and red socks. This combination has been used since 1911. Throughout their history the club has been known by a number of nicknames, including Los Colchoneros ("The Mattress Makers"), due to their first team stripes being the same colours as traditional mattresses. During the 1970s, they became known as Los Indios, which some attribute to the club's signing several South American players after the restrictions on signing foreign players were lifted. However, there are a number of alternative theories which claim they were named so because their stadium is "camped" on the river bank, or because Los Indios (The Indians) were the traditional enemy of Los Blancos (The Whites), which is the nickname of the club's city rivals, Real Madrid.

Squad Explanation
-- Diego Simeone was a big star player.  Under Simeone as the manager, I took Gabi, Diego Forlan, Diego Godin, Fernando Torres and Jan Oblak from his team.  Gabi never played for Spain, which it always found it odd.  In time, Koke might make the team.
-- Under manager Helenio Herrera , Atlético Madrid won La Liga in 1950 and 1951.  It was a Golden period for the club. Larbi Benbarek, Joaquin Peiro, Adelardo Rodriguez, Isacio Calleja, Feliciano Rivilla  and Jose Ufarte belonged to that generation.
-- Atletico Madrid reached the Final of 1974 European Cup.  From that team, I selected Luis Aragonés, Jose Eulogio Garate and Jose Ufarte.
-- Atletico Madrid won the Double in 1995/1996 season. Tomas, Jose Molina, Diego Simeone, Milinko Pantic and Jose Luis Caminero made this team.
The Double 1885-1996 season
--  Abel Resino (Spain) was considered their greatest goalkeeper.  Jose Molina won the Double. When I first wrote this blog team, Thibaut Courtois had not joined Real Madrid.  I selected him as my third goalkeeper.  He won an Europa Cup and took Atletico Madrid to a Champions' League Final. David De Gea also took the club to Europa Cup, but he left too young. However, in 2020, I decided to select Jan Oblak over Thibaut Courtois.  Liked Courtois, Oblak won an Europa Cup and took Atletico Madrid to a Champions' League Final.  Furthermore, he played much longer here.  Courtois' deflection to Real Madrid is also a very minor factor.  I also came across Edgardo Madinabeytia, but I decided to stay with the three goalkeepers in question.
-- During Egardo Madrinabeytia's time with Atletico, the club won La Liga once, three Copa del Rey and the 1961–62 European Cup Winners' Cup. He made a total of 237 appearances for the club in all competitions.
-- Atletico Madrid has plenty great left backs, but I only took Isacio Calleja because I saved a spot for an upfield player.  The other leftback choices are Filipe Luis, Juan Vizcaino, Jose Luis Capon and Panadero Diaz.  Juan Carlos Aguilera got honourable mention for the rightback spot. He took a pay cut to stay with the club when it went down to the lower division. His loyalty to the club was very important to the club. Juanfran also played well here, Tomas and Feliciano Rivilla were too strong candidates for them to break into the team.  Feliciano Rivilla
-- For centerbacks, Luis Pereira and Arteche were definitely starters. Diego Godin deserved to be on the team.  That left former teammates, Juan Manuel Lopez and Roberto Solozabal, fighting for the last spot.  Together, they came up through the academy and won the Double for the club in 1996. I went for Solozabal because his career was longer here. Jorge Griffa, Santos Ovejero and Luis Perea were also on my shortlist.
-- In the midfield, I went with Diego Simeone who won the Double.
Adelardo Rodriguez is their all-time appearance leader.  Then, I chose Gabi who was the captain of the 2014 La Liga winning team over Koke.  It would tough for Koke to make this team.
-- Larbi Benbarek took one of the attack midfield position.  No real explanation was needed.  He was probably one of their greatest players.
-- Juninho Paulista (Brazil) played only a few good seasons here.  He mainly played outside on loan.  I attended an Atletico Madrid game while he played for the club. Dirceu was in a similar position.  He was outside looking into this team.
-- I also considered dropping Milinko Pantic for Juninho.  However, Pantic was the reason for the Double in the 1995/1996 season even through Juninho was more famous outside of Madrid. Juninho was more famous internationaly due to the Brazilian national team.
-- Jose Luis Caminero could also play in various positions. For the Double winning 1995/1996 season, he won the Spanish Footballer of the Year award by both the Madrid newspaper El País and the prestigious football magazine Don Balón, being the only Atlético player to win both awards during one season
-- Sergio Aguero was a star of the club before he jumped to Manchester City.  He helped the club to win the Europa Cup in 2010.
--The peak of Fernando Torres' career was spent in the English Premiership.  Nevertheless, he was associated with the club as one of its finest from the academy who played for their first team. He was also the only member who was a part of Spain's World Cup/European Championship winning generation from 2008 to 2012.  His return to the club in 2016 showed his loyalty, but he did enough to earn a place.
-- Diego Forlan, Radamel Falcao and Hugo Sanchez were similar. Falcao and Sanchez did not stay long enough.  Sanchez's status as a Real Madrid legend affected his position.  Both Diego Forlan and Falcao won the Europa Cup, but Forlan played longer and won the European Golden Boot.
-- Adrian Escudero should be on the team, but I could not find spaces for him.  He was the all-time leading goalscorer for Atlético Madrid with 170 goals. Instead, I took midfielder Gabi who led the team to two Champions' League Finals.  In the end, it came down to Escudero and Jose Ufarte.  I took Jose Ufarte because the team needed a right winger.
Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan

Formation
The frontline consisted of the two forwards from the great Atletico Madrid side of the 1960's.  Benbarek was probably the biggest name ever to wear red, white and blue. Diego Godin is relatively young to be an All-time team, but I do think he is ready to start.
