This blogger Artur Yanturin of Russia copied many of my blog teams.  This blog was one of them.  It was my Russia All-Time Team here.  His team was written in 2020, but mine was uploaded in 2014.   His Spartak Moscow All-Time team entry of was published in October 2020, but mine was uploaded in 2017.  His entry of the Dutch-German rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona was written in 2020, but mine was uploaded in 2014.  He also copied many many of my blog entries.

Italy waited 44 years before winning the 1982 World Cup.  That summer, Serie A also relaxed its policy on foreign players.  The best players in the world all went to play over there.  For over 20 years, the league became one of the best in the world.

This is my selection of Italy All-Time Team after Italy's World Cup victory in 1982.  The number 23 was chosen because it is the official squad size for the World Cup Finals.

Italy 1994

Team
GK: Gianluigi Buffon
Gianluigi Buffon is considered to be one of the greatest keeper ever.  He made his Serie A debut at the age of 17 in 1995 with Parma.  He earned his first cap when he was only 19.  He had a total of 175 caps. His biggest achievement must be winning the World Cup in 2006.  He has been named the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year a record eight time. He became the most expensive goalkeeper of all time following his transfer from Parma to Juventus in 2001.  He moved to PSG in 2019.

Walter Zenga was considered one of Italy's greatest keepers.   He played 58 times for Italy, notably at the 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy. He had five clean sheet, a total of 518 minutes without conceding a goal, a record still standing in the World Cup Finals.  He played mainly for Inter Milan, where his career lasted from 1978 to 1994. He won a UEFA Cup with them.

Honorable Mention
Francesco Toldo, Angelo Peruzzi, Mauro Tassotti, Gianluca Pessotto, Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli, Riccardo Ferri, Giuseppe Giannini, Roberto Mancini, Gianfranco Zola, Giuseppe Signori, Luca Toni, Dino Baggio, Salvatore Schillaci, Mauro Camoranesi, Carlos Ancelotti, Alberto Gilardino, Fabio Grosso, Jorginho, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Leonardo Spinazzola, Andrea Belotti, Nicolò Barella, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Chiesa.

Squad Explanation
-- Roberto Baggio, Palbo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon are obvious choices. I always thought that Francesco Totti was underrated.  He should be an automatic selection as well.
-- Franco Baresi was a member of the 1982 World Cup team.  So he was not considered to be "after 1982".
-- Gianluigi Buffon is the obvious first choice for goalkeepers, followed by Walter Zenga.  Then, Pagliuca edges out Toldo and Peruzzi. Gianluigi Donnarumma will probably become one of the all-time greats, but only time will tell.
-- Since Gianluca Zambrotta can play both sides of the backline, I do not need many fullbacks.  Giorgio Chiellini can also play on the left.  I am not carrying a backup rightback and leftback.  Instead I selected an extra centerback.
-- Mauro Tassotti was more famous than Christian Panucci because he played for that great AC Milan team. But Panucci earned more caps for Italy.
-- Italy has a lot of talents on the centerback position.  Cannavaro and Nesta were the obvious choices.  Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Alessandro Costacurta, Riccardo Ferri and Ciro Ferrara were all great backs.  In the end, I took Costacurta and Ferrara. Giorgio Chiellini was selected because he could also serve as a backup left back. He captained Italy as they won Euro 2020 in 2021.  he deserved to be on this team(updated in 2021).
-- Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli were collectively known as "BBC".  For Juventus, they were a rock solid until.  Ironically, they lost a Champions' League final against the "BBC" of Real Madrid. Chiellini and Bonucci also won an European Championship for Italy.
-- The heros of Euro 2020 team were added to honorable mention, but they are far from making this team.  I included the following players: Jorginho, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Leonardo Spinazzola, Andrea Belotti, Nicolò Barella, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Chiesa.  Leonardo Bonucci was already on honorable mention. Giorgio Chiellini is on the team.
Euro 2020 winner
-- Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi and Gennaro Gattuso are obvious choices for the team.  Demetrio Albertini was underrated in my opinion. He was overshadowed by bigger stars with both club and country.
-- I am a big fan of Andrea Pirlo.  My view of the game changed because of him.  I realised the importance of a deep lying playmaker who controls the entire field sitting in the midfield.
-- Gennaro Gattuso's physical presence is needed on this team.  besides, his partnership with Andrea Pirlo defined a generation with both club and country. That kept Dino Baggio out of the team.
-- I need a winger on the team.  So I selected Roberto Donadoni who provided width to the attack.
-- The "trequartista"(attack midfielder) has been the soul of Italian football.   The position is very deep in Italy. Giuseppe Giannini, Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Mancini only made honorable mention. I already Francisco Totti, Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Del Piero on the team.
-- Apart from the 1990 World Cup Finals, Salvatore Schillaci did not have a big career.  So I selected Christian Vieri, Filippo Inzaghi and Gianluca Vialli all had wonderful club careers.
-- The following players were the 2006 World Cup winning team: Alessandro Del Piero, Filippo Inzaghi, Daniele De Rossi, Gennaro Gattuso, Gianluca Zambrotta, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon.
-- Gianluca Vialli was the icon of the generation between 1986 and 1990 for Italian football.  He also helped Juventus to win a Champions' League.

Formation
I tried to fit the best players on the starting lineup.  I moved Baggio to the right position.
